New Zealand’s 200 nautical-mile exclusive economic zone covers 4,1 million square kilometers and gives its fishing industry special fishing rights. This sixth largest zone in the world is home to over 15 000 marine species, about ten percent of the world’s diversity.
Many species are unique to New Zealand.
In this zone, a total of 100 independent boats fish for Fish Scale; 30 are registered in the port of Leigh, while a further 70 «long-line boats» are registered in other ports of the North Island. Their catch, including Snapper, Tarakihi, Trevally, John Dory and Blue Cod, is chilled and air freighted to arrive at destinations in Europe and the United States within three days of being caught.
